Experiences

Affordable Art Fair

On the event day, I dressed up as one of the mascots and engaged with the children. Though it was a hectic and noisy environment, seeing the children so engaged and reluctant to leave was incredibly rewarding. The experience gave me a deeper appreciation for working with young audiences and reinforced my enjoyment of creating memorable experiences for them.

Affordable Art Fair

Before the event, I volunteered to help create the set, set it up, and make paper dolls for one of the station activities. The tasks were time-consuming and involved a lot of trial and error, but it was worth it to see the children interact with and enjoy the things I had helped create. The experience taught me patience, problem-solving, and the importance of attention to detail, while also giving me a sense of satisfaction in contributing to an engaging and enjoyable environment for the children.

SRT - Shakespeare in the Park

I volunteered as Front-of-House for the SRT Shakespeare in the Park performance at Fort Canning in May 2025. I assisted in directing the audience to their seats, ensuring that audience members didn't record the performance, and ensuring that the latecomers stayed in the latecomers' zone to prevent the disruption of the performance. I also promoted the upcoming performances and assisted with inviting donations before the performance, and handed out flyers at the end.

It was my first time volunteering for an event of this scale, so I was overwhelmed at times, but this has provided me with great learning opportunities. I gained valuable experience in managing tasks under pressure, coordinating with a team, and adapting to unexpected situations.

Singapore Night Festival

RP, in collaboration with the Children's Museum, created the props and decorations for the play Nila's Shimmering Shores for Singapore Night Festival 2025. I volunteered to create the props and decorations, and on the days of the show, I was assigned to staging and sound. Through this, I learnt how to handle unexpected situations and support the team calmly when things didn’t go according to plan. It helped me become more confident working under pressure.

CPAS Sensory Adventure at RP

I assisted with prop making and Front-of-House (FOH) for this event. I assisted in creating drafts for the eel head, securing fairy lights into the treasure chest, and pinning and securing balloons. As for FOH, I entertained the children while they waited to enter the black box. Because it was an underwater sensory show, I, along with other volunteers, took streamers and waved it around the children, mimicking jellyfish and underwater creatures.

This was my first time as FOH, and this experience made me realise that I enjoy interacting with guests, specifically children. I found that I naturally gravitate towards helping them feel welcomed and engaged, which strengthened my interest in roles that involve audience-facing responsibilities.

Module Deliverables

Technical Theatre

This was the first module where I learnt the basics of designing a play. As a group, we were given the script 'Jack and the Beanstalk', and we had to design the costumes, set, lighting, and sound. Through this process, I learned how to research themes, create mood boards, and think about how visual and audio choices support the narrative.

Introduction to lighting

In this module, I learnt how lighting plays an important part in performances and shows. I've learnt how to create a gobo from an aluminum pan, recreate a portrait using lighting, and as a group, we came together and pitched ideas for iLight 2026. These hands-on projects helped me understand how creative and technical lighting can be, and how even small adjustments can completely change the mood of a scene.

Arts Managemnet

In this module, I learnt how programs in the arts are planned, structured, and carried out. My group and I worked together to create a program proposal for Affordable Art Fair 2025, which helped me understand the decision-making and collaboration needed behind the scenes. For my individual assignment, I created a proposal for The Art House, and this experience taught me how to shape an idea into something practical, meaningful, and suitable for a real arts venue.
